Best of E3 Day 1: Spider-Man, Sonic 4, And Lots of the Undead

Today was the start of the 2010 E3 and unlike last year, there are tons of great iPhone and iPad games being show.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem – Why save the best for last, let’s just start off with the best thing I’ve seen so far, Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem. This new game from Gameloft is based on the Spider-Man comics, not the movies. And the game shows it’s comic roots. While the game is still pretty early, it’s showing really great promise. No release date yet, but expect it fairly soon. Take a look at the trailer released today by Gameloft.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 – Next up, that speedy blue hedgehog turns up again in Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 for the iPhone. This, unlike the previous Sonic for the iPhone is an all new game with new graphics designed for the iPhone, not an emulated classic. The game overall looked well defined, bright, and very speedy.

Dungeon Hunter II – Another Gameloft title caught my eye today as well, this sequel dungeon game looked amazing on a demo 3GS with great lighting effects and 3D graphics. Dungeon Hunter II should be hitting the app store soon. While I only had a little time with it I was really impressed with the lighting effects and the smooth gameplay.

Zombie Wonderland – Next up, zombies and more zombies. Chillingo had a few game developers to show off. Among them two vastly different, but good, zombie games. Zombie Wonderland is a sort of time management defense game. Your job is to guard the building you are in from the approaching zombies. You do this by tapping the zombies to shoot them, boarding up windows, and placing automatic machine guns. If the zombies get inside, you have to clean up their left behind goo before time runs out — see, time management! Zombie Wonderland is available now for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and coming soon for the iPad.

Oddly, two of the largest iPhone game producing companies, EA and Activision, were not showing any new iPhone or iPad games. Very odd considering the size of the two companies.

Have What it Takes to Write for the Best iPhone App Blog?

Applications | Friday June 4 2010 2:21 am | Comments (0) Tags: , , , ,

Here we are on the verge of the next iPhone release, we now have the amazing iPad, and possibly soon, an app running Apple TV. The growth in the iPhone App world is phenomenal and we at 148Apps plan on growing with it. But to do that, we need a few additional dedicated, awesome writers. And not just someone that can string a few words together, but people that are passionate about the iPhone OS, and its apps.

To help us make the next step and grow our site you need to be dedicated, engaged, and deeply app focused. You should know the iPhone and the app world better than you know the back of your own hands. We are looking for app reviewers, both for iPhone and iPad, and news writers.

The ideal app reviewer should be able to devour apps and games and be able to write about them quickly and authoritatively. You should have a good critical eye and the ability to express yourself well. You should be able to self edit your posts and deliver them ready to publish. And most importantly you should be able to do this while keeping your review fun and interesting like the common voice of the site.

We are looking for reviewers for all types of apps and games, but particularly interested in writers that can specialize in the education, photography, and music genres when needed. But all review writers should be able to jump back and forth amongst apps and games.

In addition to review writers, we are also looking to add one or two news reporters. The ideal news reporter would be someone who knows when an app is going to be released before anyone else does. Someone who knows the industry and the people in the industry. Wakes up in the middle of the night to see what new apps have gone live. And is comfortable talking to developers, marketing people, and even press agencies. You must be able to respond to and write about events and industry changes quickly. And most importantly you should be able to filter through information for what is a good story and what is just PR fluff.

If you think either of these descriptions fit your skills, please keep reading. In exchange for your amazing writing skills, we will provide a well read (well over 600,000 readers / month) outlet for your talents. You’ll also have access to more apps than you’d ever be able to use, and of course there’s the money. We do ask that you only apply if you can keep up a regular posting frequency. While this isn’t a full time job, it’s not a once-in-a-while hobby either.

If you think you have the writing skills, the drive, and the interest to help take 148Apps to the next level, send us the following:

Your name
Where you live (city, state, country)
What iPhone OS devices you use
Why you want to write for us
What position you are interested in
3 writing sample that fit that position
Past writing experiences you have had

Email all that to helpwanted {at} 148apps {dot} com and we will be in touch.

T-Mobile’s data dongle declared best in UK tests

Information | Tuesday March 30 2010 9:09 am | Comments (0) Tags: , , , , ,

Congratulations to the data team at T-Mobile UK who have been named Dongle on The Move Winner in the Broadband Genie Road Trip 2010 Awards.

The chaps over at Broadband Genie took USB dongles from each of the major UK networks and tested them out during a two-day 350 mile road trip. They then subjected the dongles to a series of real-world tests (podcast downloads, youtube/spotify streaming and so on).

T-Mobile came out top in the download speed test — knocking back a top speed of over 3Mb. Nifty. This score led T-Mobile to trounce the competition on average across the other tests. I’m pleased to see Vodafone ranked reasonably well in most of the tests but managed only a miserable 0.3Mb upload top speed compared to 3UK’s shocking 1.6Mb top speed.

You can read the full analysis on the Broadband Genie post.

If you’re on the hunt, T-Mobile will give you a Mobile Broadband USB dongle for 8.99 plus a tenner top-up. Data will cost you 2 per day, 7 for the week and 15 for the month. Entirely reasonable. Plus, for the month of April, if you do a 2 top up, you’ll get 30 days free data.

Goodness me the cost of broadband has come down quite substantially hasn’t it? If you’d like to pay monthly, T-Mobile will give you a free dongle and unlimited (3GB fair use) data for a tenner a month (for the first 3 months) then 15/month.

I’m still turned on — in a geeky way — by 3UK’s PAYG MiFi deal. 69.99 buys you the MiFi unit bundled with 3GB of data usage valid for 3 months. Again, that looks very reasonable to me.

MiFi makes a heck of a lot of sense to me. I’ve been using this Novatel MiFi unit I was given to test for ages and it is a simply fantastic experience. I love the fact that more than one device can connect to it — and that I don’t have to mess around with connection screens and software installations. Just press the ‘on’ button and your devices are ready to connect.
