Hulu Streaming TV Finally Arrives On iOS Devices, Introduces Hulu Plus Subscription Service

The Hulu Blog today confirmed what many have been murmuring about online for some time. Hulu is bringing its streaming TV service to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The aforementioned murmurs also questioned how this delivery of most of Americas top TV shows would be paid for, they too were given an answer with the introduction of the Hulu Plus subscription.

Formerly only available via a PC or Mac, the Hulu Plus app and subscription service will combine to deliver episodes from current and classic TV shows on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the iPad and third gen iPod touch.

At present the service is working on an invite-only basis (apply for one here) and will cost users $9.99 per month but, for this fee you do get a good deal of benefits. Full seasons of TV shows will be available including big hitters such as Family Guy, 30 Rock and The Office with up to 720p HD resolution available. Through the Hulu Plus app, users will be able to browse, search and resume playback at the same point on different devices. For iPhone and iPad users, you will even be able to stream over 3G!

While weve not had the chance to fully test Hulu Plus yet, this sounds like the service Apples portable devices have been crying out for and one that will likely bring about a few discussions inside Apple HQ. With the recent acquisition of media streaming startup Lala, it is rumored the company is gearing up to introduce a cloud-based iTunes service that could include streaming TV shows to iPhones and iPads.

The Hulu Plus app is available for free on the App Store and includes a bunch of freebies that dont need a subscription in order to try out. The movie Super Size Me is included as well as clips and episodes from a number of TV shows as well, so its worth sampling the app for these bonuses alone.

Check it out on the App Store here

Unlimited data in 21 countries for $15/day – finally

Information | Wednesday May 26 2010 11:04 am | Comments (5) Tags: , , , ,

Finally. Finally someone has setup a useful worldwide data roaming service at a reasonable charge. Vodafone’s international service doesn’t quite cut it for me, especially when I’m only getting 25mb for whatever it is, 5 or something. I use 25mb of data just getting out of bed in the morning.

Enter XCom Global. They have done the arsing around on your behalf. All you need to do is hire the USB broadband stick or MiFi unit and pay them the fee ($14.95/day for the USB stick and $17.95/day for the Novatel Wireless MiFi unit).

Genius.

Granted, $17.95 will add up. But that’s proper use. Proper data use. Unlimited fair use. No stupid silly limits. If you’re going to America for 10 days and you want unlimited data, that’ll cost you $179.50 (if you’d like a MiFi) or $149.50 if you just want the USB stick. First let’s convert that into pounds. 125 and 104 respectively.

Let’s compare that with paying Vodafone for international roaming in the USA at their published rate of 3 per meg. Assume I end up using an average of 70mb per day, right? That would cost me 210 per day or 2,100 for the 10 day trip. Now the XCom rates look positively saintly.

Of course you could just buy a MiFi and buy a local sim card when you arrive in the States. But if you don’t want the hassle, do consider the XCom offer.

Picture 5Just 40 days before the start of WWDC, Apple has finally announced the dates for WWDC, their annual developer conference. And there are some major changes this year.

WWDC will be held in San Francisco, at Moscone Convention Center West from June 7th-11th. The ticket price has risen this year to $1599 and are available through the Apple Developer portal.

The big changes this year are a definite slant toward the iPhone OS and the iPhone/iPad devices. Last year, sessions were split between Mac OS, Enterprise IT and iPhone OS sessions. This year there’s hardly anything but iPhone OS. Though a few of the sessions do apply to Enterprise IT, they are iPhone focused.
