You know all those Apple commercials that feature a series of apps and then a word after each like “entertaining,” “productive,” and “artistic?” Well it seems you can add “life-saving” to the list as a basketball coach in Los Angeles used the iPhone Aid app to resuscitate a young player who nearly died during a game.

Xavier Jones collapsed during a high school basketball game, at which point coaches Eric Cooper Sr. and John Osorno rushed onto the court and, with the help of Phone Aid, began administering CPR. The two men kept the boy stabilized until paramedics arrived and were able to take him to the hospital. Jones is expected to make a full recovery.

Cooper had purchased the app just the night before, in what turned out to be an extremely fortuitous coincidence. “It was really fresh and clear in my brain,” Cooper said of the life-saving technique. “We are trained in CPR, but the iPhone app was a stabilizer for us.” At the hospital Jones was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hardening of the heart muscles, which caused the near-fatal event.

It’s situations like these which prove once again that the iPhone is so much more than a phone or a fancy gaming device, but can also be harnessed to really do some measurable good in the world. Though we can’t say that Jones wouldn’t have survived if his coach hadn’t downloaded Phone Aid, having the app helped make sure that proper first aid was administered and a young man’s life was allowed to continue, making it well worth the $1.99 asking price if you ask us. We wish Jones a speedy recovery and offer our heartfelt thanks to Entanke for creating such a wonderful app. This is a feel-good story if there ever was one.

Google kills Android phone store and admits defeat

Well then, chalk another massive unreserved fcuk-up on the ‘Google Screw-up Blackboard’. TechCrunch reports that Google is shelving plans to disintermediate the planet’s mobile phone industry.

If you recall, google.com/phone was intended to be your one-stop-shop for Android handsets where you could, if you wished, pick up a handset unlocked or select your dumb pipe/bank of choice to get the device on contract and subsidised.

That was the idea. And it was a very real threat to the industry. Until about 20 minutes into the launch when it became clear that Google couldn’t cope with actual real people asking questions. The one thing you can’t do with customers paying 500 quid for a device is plug them into an API. No. Someone has to answer the phone at the end of the day. Or at least the email.

I know many of the operators I’ve spoken to are privately filled with glee at the unmitigated screw-up. One thing operators can do in their sleep is manage 18 million customers reasonably competently.

It seems as though Google simply couldn’t hack it, with some operators refusing to play along with the google.com/phone concept. I’d have liked to have seen a lot better. An awful lot better.

Meanwhile I’m beginning to side with many who refer to Google in a reasonably accurate manner as a one-trick-multi-billion-dollar-pony. Oh, and Gmail/Google apps is good too.

Gahhhh.

media.1If there’s one thing that’s true about Oprah, it’s that she’s everywhere: on TV, in movies, in her magazine, you name it. And now, at long last, Oprah fans will be able to follow her ample activities on yet another platform…the iPhone.

The new Oprah Mobile app gives you plenty of content: video clips and previews from the show, air times and channel information for Oprah’s show based on their location, the show’s weekly calendar, and audio clips from Oprah Radio. There are video and audio clips, polls, pledges, photo galleries, and articles, drawn from Oprah’s myriad of networks. Oprah Radio, O, The Oprah Magazine, Oprah.com, and even Oprah’s Twitter account are all represented. And if that’s not enough “O” for you, the app will even alert you when tickets to her last season become available online!

Phew. It’s rare enough that people manage to comprehend the iPhone’s capabilities, but this complex offering really does do the Oprah brand credit. The interface is smooth and lightweight, and the app manages to integrate a staggering amount of content in a tiny package. Of course, if you want this Oprah-overload in the palm of your hand, you’ll have to pay: unlike many branded apps, this one comes with a modest $1.99 price tag. Oprah Mobile certainly offers plenty in return for that small entrance fee, though, so if you’re an Oprah fan, go check it out!
